Farm bill about security

June 21, 2007

As I have been watching the debate recently over the 2007 Farm Bill, both rhetoric in Congress and in the media, I have become very concerned about the lack of concern amongst my fellow Americans.

Farm programs cost taxpayers less than 1 percent of the federal budget, yet I hear constant calls for elimination or restructuring of these programs that help farmers in this country continue to provide the safest, most abundant and most affordable food supply in this world.

Recent food safety concerns should remind everyone why having a food supply right here at home is so important.

Farmers, as price-takers and not price-makers, often struggle in a very risky business, but they do it to provide a much-needed service providing food for this nation and for so many others who are unable to provide their own.

As Norman Borlaug, a great wheat researcher whose work saved countless lives, once said, "Civilization as it is known today could not have evolved, nor can it survive, without an adequate food supply."

National security means food security.
