Area bank robbed
Dale Allen Robertson, 54, no known address, appeared in federal court Monday on a charge of armed bank robbery.
In a criminal complaint filed Friday, Robertson was charged with a June 6 robbery at First Kansas Bank and Trust Company, 405 E. Nelson Street, Edgerton.
"According to the complaint, Robertson pointed a handgun at the abdomen of a visibly pregnant teller during the robbery," said U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren.
An investigator's affidavit filed with the complaint says that Robertson entered the bank at 12:24 p.m. June 6, brandished a black revolver, placed a plastic bag on the counter and demanded money. He left on foot and escaped in a maroon van parked outside the post office at Fourth and Nelson.
Investigators obtained a series of color photographs taken earlier that day at a bank in Wellsville, Those pictures, taken about an hour before the robbery at First Kansas Bank and Trust, depicted an individual who bank personnel had identified as acting suspiciously. Witnesses identified the man in the photos from Wellsville as the same man who robbed the First Kansas Bank and Trust.
Robertson was identified and arrested during a traffic stop Friday night in Lawrence.
If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.
The Johnson County Sheriff's Office, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked on the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Scott Rask is prosecuting.
