High water speeds Saturday canoe race
In the first of what organizer Darrel Zimmerman hopes will become an annual event, canoes launched from Saturday morning for a 12-mile race down the Kansas River to the De Soto boat ramp.
Winning the race was the father-and-son team of Ken and Travis Tilford of Edwardsville with a time of 1 hour, 45 minutes.
The race was postponed from early May because of high water on the river, which was still at a 10-foot river stage. That did not detract from the enjoyment of the river environment and habitat, including a pair of bald eagles.
Another race is in consideration for September when students return to area colleges.
