Pelkey receives nomination to academy
William Pelkey, De Soto, was nominated by Congressman Dennis Moore, D-Kansas, to attend a U.S. Military Service Academy.
Pelkey was one of 13 nominees from the Third Congressional District. He received nominations for the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y., the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
"Kansas has always had a proud tradition of sending outstanding candidates on to become military leaders," Moore said. "After reviewing this year's group of nominees, I'm confident these young people will carry on that proud tradition. I am very pleased to do what I can to help them in developing their promising futures."
Each of the nominees demonstrates exemplary academic and leadership skills. To receive the nomination, they completed academic and physical screenings by the academies, wrote essays describing why they aspired to attend an academy and were interviewed by prominent local members of the armed forces. They will now send their applications with recommendations to their respective academies for review.
In the spring, academies will notify those students who were selected to become a part of the class of 2011.
