Traffic signal contract awarded
With funding in place through a benefit district, the De Soto City Council last Thursday awarded the contract to install a traffic signal at Commerce Drive and Lexington Avenue.
The council awarded the contract to low-bidder, Wildcat Signal of Manhattan.
City engineer Mike Brungardt said Tuesday he sent the contract to Wildcat Signal but had not heard from company officials about when work would start.
The city will pay for 55 percent of the signal's $180,000 total cost, with assessments against properties along Commerce Drive and 91st Street paying for the rest.
The south Commerce Drive/Lexington Avenue intersection might be in for another needed improvement. Brungardt said Sunflower Redevelopment LLC has no objection with the city moving the dip at the railroad crossing immediately east of the intersection.
Such a project would require the railroad bed be raised some distance to the north and south of Commerce Drive. No plans or cost estimates exist for the project and it is not on the city's capital improvement list.
