Among the family photographs in Eldean Shultz’s living room is one of a lean young man with a full beard and white straw hat, smiling broadly into the camera while fishing. “He was my youngest,” Shultz said. “He was good to me. Everything I asked him to do around here, he would do.” Twelve years ago last week, the man in the picture, Jack Shultz, was reported missing to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. Despite a lengthy investigation involving hundreds of interviews, no trace of Jack was ever found.

De Soto 2006 housing starts steady, could boom this year

De Soto’s new home starts remained steady in 2006 but expect significantly more in the coming year. The city recorded 33 new home starts last year — the same as 2005 — but added 12 new units from three triplexes and three new commercial buildings.

Traffic calming methods deserve second look

As a result of the debate over Oak Country 8, the De Soto City Council late last year considered traffic calming devices for 91st Street. After some discussion, it was decided not to install the devices on the street. Furthermore, it moved on without developing a policy for when the installation of traffic calming should be considered.
