Letter: Bond discussion should wait
After reading the article in the Feb. 15 De Soto Explorer, I was compelled to write this letter pertaining to the USD 232 facilities issues. With the upcoming school board election and a change in a minimum of one board member, and the potential of four member changes, I feel it is premature to discuss a future bond prior to the April 3 general election.
When I took office, July 1, 2005, three months after that year's election, I was forced to accept decisions I would not have approved as a BOE member. A great number of citizens I interact with believe past school board decisions have caused too many disruptions in families, vis a vie, boundary changes, as well as poor planning and cost effectiveness in construction of facilities.
The sheer number of candidates who have committed to run for school board should speak volumes as to the dissatisfaction of past board decisions. There is no doubt we will have to address a bond in the near future. It is only ethical that we let the next board decide on that proposal.
