Families to receive invitation to join Scouting

August 16, 2007

As thousands of boys return to elementary school, they also have a chance to become Cub Scouts.

Traditionally, School Night to Join Scouting is an evening for families to go to their local elementary school to meet the volunteer leaders and register their sons in the program.

This year the Heart of America Council has added a new twist. Families of identified first- and second-graders in De Soto will receive a packet delivered directly to their homes. The packet includes an informational letter, a brief DVD video presentation entitled "A Family's Dream," and a packet of Trails End Gourmet Popcorn. Families are encouraged to set aside time to consider the Scouting program.

Cub Scouting is a family-centered program based around the fun of camping, pinewood derbies, day camps, sports, and academics. Boys in grades one through five are encouraged to join.

If families would like to enroll their sons, they can attend a School Night to Join Scouting Open House.

School night open houses are scheduled for De Soto Elementary Schools on the following days:

Aug. 21: Prairie Ridge Elementary, 7 p.m.

Aug. 23: Horizon Elementary, Mize Elementary, Riverview Elementary, 7 p.m.

Aug. 28: Clear Creek Elementary, 7 p.m.

Aug. 30: Starside Elementary, 7 p.m.

The Boy Scouts of America is comprised of more than 1.25 million volunteers working together for the sole purpose of helping more than 3 million youth members succeed in life.
