Sesquicentennial canoe race scheduled
There will be a Kansas River canoe race May 26 from Eudora to De Soto in conjunction with the sesquicentennial celebrations of the two cities and their association with the river.
De Soto was described in 1861 as a "small village on the banks of the river with an ambition of becoming a 'rivertown' where steamboats might come and go loaded with freight from the west."
Registrations and an entry fee of $20 for each two-member team will be collected beginning at 8:15 a.m. the day of the race with launch time scheduled for 9 a.m.
All participants will be expected to follow water safety practices while on their 12.5-mile journey downstream to De Soto.
The winning team will receive all the prize money plus a traveling trophy.
