Explorer wins KPA awards
The Kansas Press Association had its 115th Annual Convention April 19-21 in Topeka.
Eighty-six Kansas newspapers competed in the association's annual Awards of Excellence contest. Members of the Missouri Newspaper Association judged the entries.
The De Soto Explorer competed in the non-daily division I category with circulation of 1,750 or less.
The Explorer earned seven first-place plaques; four second-place awards; eight third-place awards and one honorable mention.
The newspaper received first place for front page, sports pages, Web site, local business story, photo illustration, infographic and public notices.
The Explorer had a "good mixture of hard/feature news," according to the judges. "Eye-catching photos and graphics helped tell the stories. Visually appealing and well-balanced."
The sports pages had "judicious use of photography and plenty of local stories."
The judges said Joel Reichenberger's local business story on "Big air to space" gave "good descriptive words illustrating the activities at the water park. The story entices the reader to check out the water park."
Elvyn Jones' infographic on the school's bond issue was "Good, clean and informative. Graphic does a nice job of telling where, how much and who it affects."
Second-place awards were given for editorial writing, editorial pages, headline writing and religion story.
The judges said the editorials were succinct and had a clear opinion.
The religion story "Giving back" gave a "nice angle on the post-hurricane help."
The Explorer received third place for best use of photos, design and layout, Jones' agricultural story "Milking the moment," series writing on the school district's bond issue, Reichenberger's youth story "Playing favorites" and his photo illustration "Man on a mission," J.J. De Simone's feature photo "Earning their spurs" and Jones' photo package of De Soto High School graduation.
The newspaper also earned honorable mention for feature photo.
