Local trees nominated for champions
Debbie and Dave Hanson and the Monticello Community Historical Society in western Shawnee have submitted nominations to the Kansas Forest Service for a possible champion tree.
One of three very large silver maple trees located near 71st and Gleason on private property may be a candidate for Champion Silver Maple of Kansas.
The trees will be measured by Kim Bomberger, District Forester in Manhattan, to determine if one of the local trees is larger than the current champion silver maple. Nominations are judged by a point system established by The American Forests National Register of Big Trees. The Kansas Champion Tree Program, of the Kansas Forest Service, maintains a database of the largest trees of the various species in Kansas.
To celebrate Arbor Day 2007, Kim Bomberger will measure the trees at 11 a.m. April 24 at 7230 Gleason Road, Shawnee, to measure the trees. There will be a brief Arbor Day event and members of the Monticello Community Historical Society will share the history of Arbor Day and local history during the life of the trees.
Monticello Community Historical Society members will also plant a tree on the grounds of the Monticello Historical Station, 23860 W. 83rd St., at about 1 p.m.
