De Soto students named to state choir

April 12, 2007

Two De Soto High School students have been selected for a statewide choir.

Junior Tricia Roberts and sophomore Jenna Hodges will rehearse and perform in Topeka in July with the Kansas Choral Directors Association State Women's Choir. The choir consists of 80 high school singers from 20 schools across the state.

Last month nine singers from DHS submitted to a panel of six choral directors a capella recordings of the same song. The recordings demonstrated the extent of the students' vocal range. Selection was based on tone quality, accuracy, intonation, vibrato, and range.

Directing the choir will be Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt of Ohio State University, president-elect of the national branch of the Choral Directors Association.

The DHS students are coached by Mary Etta Copeland, director of choral music.
