Vinland Living Nativity canceled

November 22, 2006

Vinland United Methodist Church will no longer have the annual Living Nativity.

For 30 years, on the three nights before Christmas, the church members and other people in the community recreated the manger scene in a local barn, and in recent years on the Vinland Fairgrounds.

Vinland United Methodist Church members appreciate those who dedicated many hours and talent for scheduling babies and families, setting up and tearing down the manger scene, preparing costumes and providing snacks for the participants, shepherding the animals, manning the reception table, attending the parking area, and numerous other tasks.

Contributions from the event for many years were donated to Youthville, Inc. of Newton. The members of Vinland United Methodist Church will seek other ways to assist that organization, which provides shelter and counseling for troubled youth.

The members are willing to share information with any other group or organization that might want to continue or start a living nativity.
