Fifties Christmas tours

November 22, 2006

A Very Fifties Christmas, hosted by The 1950s All-Electric House at the Johnson County Museum of History, 6305 Lackman Road in Shawnee, is open from Saturday to Dec. 31 and offers the only 1950s-style holiday house tour in the Kansas City metropolitan area. With an aluminum tree and color wheel as the central features, the house showcases the holiday celebrations and space age decorations of a 1950s holiday.

The site will be closed on Mondays plus Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, 2007.

Guided tours are available every 30 minutes from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and Sundays. Extended tour hours on Saturdays, offered through Dec. 30, are available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are $2 for adults and $1 for children 12 years and younger.

Tours are first come, first served and limited to groups of 10 people.

Groups of 10 or more may call (913) 715-2570 to make advanced reservations for special weekday morning tours. Tickets for morning tours are $2 for all ages.

The Moonglow Tours will be Dec. 16.

Named for the special nightlights in the house, the Moonglow Tours feature tour guides dressed in period attire who will guide visitors through the holiday open house. At the end of the tour, guests may sample 1950s treats and receive a holiday memento to take home.

Tours are offered from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. with tours leaving every 10 minutes. Tours are limited to 10 people per tour.

Tickets, including refreshments, are $4 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Tickets are only sold the day of the event.
