It was bad enough when all the De Soto boys basketball team wasn’t returning as its seniors from a year ago. That group included leading scorers Scott McElvain and Taylor Burnett, and low-post muscle Colby Childers. That trio accounted for more than half of the team’s points per game.

There’s no need for deception. The De Soto girls basketball team will lean heavily on the exact same two weapons it relied upon last season — points leaders Kira Gonzalez and Jackie Goleman. The pair led the Wildcats in points and rebounds and were major factors in the team’s winning record.

It’s not just replacing the victories. Really, who would even think about that? Replacing the uber-successful Neil Erisman on De Soto’s wrestling mat will be about trying to find someone else to wrestle at his weight or represent the Wildcats at the state tournament. But the most important aspect of the biggest change in the last four years of De Soto wrestling will be trying to replace the leadership and the lessons of one of the most successful individuals in Wildcat grappling history.

Tonganoxie to sue petitioners trying to stop road improvement

In a lawsuit filed Monday in Leavenworth County District Court, the city of Tonganoxie is asking a judge to rule that a petition seeking a vote on funding for Leavenworth County Road 1 is invalid. The petition, signed by 354 local residents, calls for a vote on the city’s financial participation in a project to upgrade the county road. Improving the road is part of a larger project that includes a new Kansas Turnpike interchange.
