County asks vets to wear medals at Friday observance
The 20th annual Veterans Day Observance in Johnson County is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at the National Guard Armory, 1601 West Old 56 Highway, Olathe.
The public event is being sponsored and organized by the Johnson County Veterans Day Task Force, representing local veterans organizations in partnership with the Johnson County Board of Commissioners.
Featured speakers will be County Commission Chair Annabeth Surbaugh and U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore.
As part of the national "Veterans Pride Initiative" campaign by major veterans organizations and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, local veterans are encouraged to wear the medals they earned during their military service to the ceremony.
The ceremony will feature patriotic music by the Olathe South High School Band, presentation of colors by the Johnson County Sheriff's Office Honor Guard, placement of several memorial wreaths, and traditional playing of "Taps" and the firing of a 21-rifle salute.
The offices of the city of De Soto and Johnson County Government will be closed Friday in observance of Veterans Day.
