Jackie Goleman leads a medal-hungry De Soto team to the state track meet

Jackie Goleman will participate in three events Friday and Saturday at the state track meet in Wichita. That is not new ground. The Wildcat junior ran in the 100- and 300-meter hurdles races and jumped in the high jump a year ago as well. But if things go well, competing in those three events will be the only thing similar to last year’s state meet.

Frehe hoping new pace can net state medal

Morgan Frehe has never had a problem finding her pace off the track. She thinks and talks, congratulates and encourages from the moment she crosses the finish line of one race to the moment she starts the next one. She didn’t ensure her spot in Saturday’s 3,200-meter run at the state track meet until she found her pace on the track, however.

The difference in Luke Krehbiel seemed obvious. A hard-work offseason had him running and hurdling as fast as he ever had, right? Not exactly, De Soto coach Brian Dinkel said.

De Soto coach Chris McAfee said he saw the moment Lauren Karnitz decided to race for state. Well behind the leaders in Friday’s 1,600-meter race at the regional track meet, she was just 10 meters behind her closest competitor.
Tennis team grabs medals at state tournament

The state tennis tournament began and ended in exactly the same way for Dan Hoschouer and Andy Edwards — Andrew Kahley and Isaac Chambers from Smokey Valley celebrated at the De Soto pair’s expense. It was what happened in between that made the experience special, however.

The lights were still bright as De Soto’s baseball team filed past, heading into the stands to greet friends and parents. The Bishop Ward team, still celebrating its return to the state tournament, yelled and its fans cheered on the other side of the field.

It was De Soto’s third game in the big park — the Kansas City T-Bone’s Commercial America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan. The first two had gone according to plan. The Cats had advanced through their regional, first knocking off Atchison relatively easily, and then outlasting Tonganoxie.
