De Soto program in need of volunteers

May 11, 2006

Volunteers are needed throughout the county to deliver meals to homebound older adults in Johnson County, including De Soto's Meals on Wheels program.
Many older adults in Johnson County receive noon meals at their residence. Volunteers who provide not only a nutritious meal, but also a personal link to the community deliver the meals. Approximately 600 meals are delivered daily to seniors in the area. More than 57 volunteers are needed on a daily basis.
Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver meals once a week or when available, from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Monday through Friday.
Individuals, civic groups, faith community teams or employee teams can deliver meals. Children are welcome to accompany a parent while volunteering.
The Catch A Ride program, which provides door-to-door transportation, is also available for seniors to stay connected with the community and continue to participate in life events.
For more information, call the Johnson County nutrition volunteer coordinator at (913) 477-8174.
