DHS booster club to provide schedules

March 30, 2006

The De Soto High School booster club is putting together the first official calendar to support the school.

Booster club president Tim McNamara said the new calendar would be free and paid entirely through advertising. He said the club was tired of watching independent companies sell advertising and make a profit without much benefit to the school.

"Anybody can get on the school's Web site and print off a calendar," he said. "There's several out-of-town companies that only give back a small amount of the proceeds so this is a way for us to raise quite a bit more money that stays in the community at DHS."

McNamara said the booster club's calendar would give 100 percent of its proceeds back into sports programs and activities at the high school. The club not only supports all the athletic teams, but the band, the moon buggy team and other academic activities.

"Because it's done locally, we've got a better understanding of our own high school," he said. "The kids will be involved in actual graphic design work, so it's a good thing all the way around."

McNamara said the calendar this year would be a basic design since it must go to press July 1. Next year, he said the booster club would like to have team pictures or activity pictures for the calendar.

"We haven't chosen a printer yet, and we're definitely going to be pursuing someone local to help us with that," he said. "If there's not one capable in De Soto, we can try to find someone with connections to De Soto."

McNamara also said the calendar sales would keep the booster club from having mini-fund-raisers where students had to sell a variety of items to help pay for trips or participate in various activities.

"The moon buggy team may not need as much, but the football team will need a lot more money," he said. "This would help them more than the booster club has been able to in the past."

The calendar will have 2-by-2 inch and 2-by-4 inch advertising spaces available. The booster club hopes to have it finished by registration time in August so De Soto families can pick them up before school starts next year.
