All-area girls basketball

The Lawrence Journal-World sports staff selected the all-area girls basketball team recently. Selections were based heavily on voting by area coaches and performances throughout the season. All area coaches had an opportunity to vote for first-team, second-team and honorable mention honors.

Tonganoxie's Ali Pistora was named Player of the Year. The 6-foot junior guard led the Chieftains in scoring with an average of 13.9 points per game.

Other's named to the first team were Carrie Lister, sr., 5-9 forward, Eudora; Megan Ramsey, sr., 5-9 guard, Ottawa; Megan Reed, sr., 5-9 forward, Oskaloosa; and Kelsey Verhaeghe, jr., 5-5 guard, Baldwin.

Lister averaged 12.5 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game. Ramsey averaged 14.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg. Reed averaged 14.2 ppg and 6.8 rpg and Verhaeghe averaged 12.8 ppg and scored 50 three-pointers. Lister, Ramsey and Verhaeghe were Frontier League all-league selections. Reed was a Delaware Valley League all-league selection.

Second team selections were Rachel Bogard, Tonganoxie; Megan Blosser, Perry-Lecompton; Jackie Goleman, De Soto; Brooke Pryor, Santa Fe Trail; and Carly Santulauria, Mill Valley.

Those who received honorable mention were Elizabeth Baska, Tonganoxie; Michelle Deluna, Erin Kracl and Nikki Snider, all of Eudora; Kira Gonzalez, De Soto; Ali King and Taylor King, both of Oskaloosa; Katelyn Miles, Baldwin; Amanda Shaver and Rachael Thompson, both of McLouth.

Tonganoxie coach Randy Kraft was named coach of the year.

The De Soto Explorer is owned by the World Company, which also owns the Lawrence Journal-World.
