All-area boys basketball
The Lawrence Journal-World sports staff selected the all-area boys basketball team recently. Selections were based heavily on voting by area coaches and performances throughout the season. All area coaches had an opportunity to vote for first-team, second-team and honorable mention honors.
Ottawa's Addison Miller was named Player of the Year. The 6-foot-1 senior guard averaged 17.3 points per game while scoring in double figures in 21 of Ottawa's 22 contests.
Other's named to the first team were Aaron Hannon, sr., 5-9 guard, Baldwin; Jackson, sr., 5-10 guard, Mill Valley; Rodney Spillman, sr., 6-0 forward, Eudora; and Kyle Wright, sr., 6-4 forward, Wellsville.
Spillman averaged 16.1 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per game. Hannon averaged 14.1 ppg, 2.7 assists per game and 2.7 steals per game. Johnson averaged 12.5 ppg and 3.0 apg. He drilled 56 three-pointers. Wright averaged 11.9 ppg and leg the Eagles in rebounding.
Spillman, Hannon and Wright were Frontier League all-league selections. Johnson was an All-Kaw Valley League selection.
Second team selections were Kyle DeBerg, Mill Valley; Matt Leecy and Victor Ojeleye, both of Ottawa; Scott McElvain, De Soto; and Jeremy Wright, Baldwin.
Those who received honorable mention were Mark Abel, Eudora; Austin Bloss and Colin Wright, both of Wellsville; Taylor Burnett, De Soto; Jake Carter, Santa Fe Trail; Gabe Gantz, Chris Ketter and Cory McPherson, all of Perry-Lecompton; Cody Heston, Oskaloosa; Trevor Keling and Kevin Stewart, both of McLouth; and Philip Sylvester, Ottawa.
Mill Valley coach Justin Bogart was named coach of the year.
