Services for George L. Ryan, 71, Parsons, were Wednesday, June 21, at Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Parsons. Burial was in Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens in Shawnee Mission.
Mr. Ryan died Friday, June 16, 2006, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo.
He was born Dec. 13, 1934, in Nevada, Mo., the son of Charles and Hattie May Ryan. He grew up and attended school in Nevada before serving in the U.S. Army.
Upon returning to Nevada, he worked for a vault company. He later worked as a custodian in De Soto schools and was employed by Shawnee Mission Memorial Gardens. He moved to Parsons in 1981 and worked in the city sanitation department for 14 years before retiring.
He married Lucille Galliher Hicks in March 1958. He later married Nellie Clark McCracken on June 30, 1973, in Eudora. She preceded him in death on Aug. 2, 2005.
Survivors include four sons, Norman McCracken Jr. and Ed McCracken, both of Parsons, Donald McCracken, Lansing, and Steve McCracken, De Soto; three daughters, Velma Steinman, Jefferson City, Mo., and Nelda Bass and Norma Coleman, both of Parsons; four sisters, Judy Brokcoff and Velma May Johnson, both of Nevada, Mo., Betty Thornburg, Rich Hill, Mo., and Dorothy Genslor; 20 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two grandsons; a brother, Charles Ryan; and a sister, Rosie Thornburg.
The family suggests memorials to the Mt. Carmel Cancer Center, sent in care of the Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, Box 374, Parsons 67357.
