Love and Other Impossible Pursuits
By Ayelet Waldman (Fiction 2006)
Emilia has married her "soul mate." He comes with a part-time son, William, 5 going on 50 and is lactose intolerant.
William and Emilia have some of the most interesting encounters in modern fiction. This is the candid roller-coaster story of Emilia, her husband, William, and other family members as they work through the tragic loss of a newborn. They must also cope with William as he struggles with his parents' divorce, with his mother's fanatical parental tirades and with Emilia's father's split from her mother after taking up with a stripper.
This is all very civilized, taking place in and around Central Park in New York City. The story is full of heart-clutching pain and tender humor.
