Leon Coker spent the summer he graduated from De Soto High School jumping the Kansas River as he irrigated cantaloupes he was growing in De Soto’s East Bottoms. “You could walk all the way across it,” he said of the river in the summer of 1936. “There were just a few small little streams you could jump over.”
Boundary committee selection process changed

After a Monday evening tour of Mill Creek Middle School, the De Soto USD 232 Board of Education agreed to alter the participation in a boundary committee that will recommend how school boundaries within the district will change with the opening of the middle school and a new elementary school in August 2007.

Rebecca England is a coach — that much was obvious Monday morning even though she was directing what wasn’t even yet really a team. She planned the practice and issued orders. She had her athletes partake in drills and she introduced strategies. She raised her voice when she was trying to correct mistakes, she taught a group one thing and offered individual instruction in another.

3-mill hike forecast for De Soto district

District finance director Ken Larsen presented a mill levy recommendation to USD 232 Board of Education members Monday. The mill levy can’t be determined until after a court ruling that could change the method of funding for all Kansas schools, so any of the numbers could change in a few weeks, Larsen said.
