Flu response forum set
The Johnson County Health Department will conduct public forums throughout the month of July to help residents become versed on the county's overall emergency plan as well as receive tips for personal preparedness.
The first scheduled forum will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Johnson County Government Administration Building, Room 1054-55, 111 South Cherry Street, Olathe.
The subject of the forum will be the county's response to a pandemic influenza outbreak. Although there is no pandemic flu at this time, pandemic influenza strains spread relatively easily and can cause serious worldwide illness and death.
The federal, state and local government agencies have developed plans in the event of a pandemic, but they do require the cooperation and participation of citizens to be effective. It is projected that with the next pandemic, more than 1 million Kansans could fall ill, with more than 5,000 becoming hospitalized.
