Postponed games rescheduled
Theoretically, the De Soto boys and girls basketball teams should be cruising through the heart of their schedule.
Not at this rate.
De Soto had a game canceled for the second-straight week Tuesday as the Wildcats' planned trip to Central Heights was called off because of inclement weather.
Both the supposed Jan. 3 trip to Wellsville and Tuesday's scheduled game at Central Heights have been rescheduled.
The boys will play Jan. 25 at Wellsville, squeezing the junior varsity and varsity games in during a week when the girls will be playing in a tournament in Louisburg.
The girls journey to Wellsville eight days later, visiting the Eagles on Feb. 1.
Both the boys and girls will play Jan. 30 at Central Heights, filling up one of the few holes remaining in De Soto's schedule.
Though there was little that could be done about the Jan. 3 Wellsville cancelation -- the sudden nature of the water main issues left administrators with no option -- Tuesday's trip to Central Heights almost went on as planned.
Drizzle and brief showers of snow clouded opportunities to play all day, but the Central Heights officials left the decision up to the traveling Wildcats Tuesday afternoon. And the Cats were set to go, even loading buses in preparation.
A continued worsening of conditions finally doomed the game, however, and officials at both schools decided it'd be best to wait for another day.
"It was a mutual decision," De Soto athletic director Roy Hawley said. "They left it up to De Soto if we thought we could make it. We decided we should go ahead and go. We called the sheriffs and they said the roads were being treated. Then some of our people were having a hard time getting around and it would have been treacherous for their people as well, so it was a good mutual decision."
The boys and girls team play together one more time in the coming days, Friday at home against Osawatomie. The girls varsity game is set to start around 6:30 p.m. The boys and girls team play together one more time in the coming days, Friday at home against Osawatomie.
