Interest sought in De Soto holiday parade

August 31, 2006

As final plans are being made for the De Soto Days Festival parade, the De Soto Sesquicentennial Committee is testing community interest for a holiday parade.

Sesquicentennial Committee chairwoman Lana McPherson said the committee would like to have a parade in conjunction with the December Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting. The traditional early December event -- set for 5 p.m. Dec. 2 -- is to be the launch of the yearlong celebration of the city's 150th anniversary.

"Some ideas were being tossed about, but before we went further we decided to see if there was any interest and if there are any other community organizations who would help," McPherson said.

McPherson said she envisioned a short parade from through downtown to the De Soto Community Center.

"We just want people to start thinking about 2007 and the celebration," McPherson said.

Those interested in participating or helping organize a parade should call McPherson at 583-1182, extension 110.
