April 2001
De Soto High School National Honor Society members were inducted for 2001-2002.
Members were Leanne Wilson, Cheri Travis, Andrina Parker, David Moore, William Meier, Sarah McAllister, Stephanie Kroemer, Lauren Kostas, Kerry Regan, Ashley Carlson, Carmen Garcia, Kala Glass, Erika Kuster and Jodi King.
¢ Mayor Steve Prudden awarded members of the De Soto Park Commission with certificates of appreciation.
Those receiving the awards were Vernon Brown, Mike Nolan, Barry Thierer, Lyndie Willhite, Chad Johnson (who accepted the certificate for his mother, Tammie), Dave Dabbs, Mike Sanderson, Lori Murdock, Deanna Stephens, Richard Bull and Kent Dvorak.

The De Soto High School academic team of Mogusar, West, Hesser and Bedford defeated Eureka at the quarterfinals at the WIBW TV-13 studio in Topeka by a score of 260-155.
¢ De Soto Avon representative Dorothy Nalley received an award for her services in the company. She was given a silver plate with her name inscribed on it. Norma Black, Olathe, presented her with a floral arrangement.
¢ Southwestern Bell Telephone Company proposed a new optional local telephone service plan that allowed De Soto customers to make unlimited telephone calls into the metropolitan Kansas City, Kan., area for a flat monthly rate.

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6654 elected new officers -- Larrie Davis, commander; James Aubert, senior vice; Arch Bedford, junior vice; John Conrad, sergeant; Warren Grover, chaplain; and Roger Sellers, quartermaster. New officers assumed their stations in June.
¢ Mr. and Mrs. Bill Ridgeway purchased the Bill Plummer property on North Wyandotte. The Plummers moved to Olathe.
¢ Leota Long, Barbara Dickerson, Juanita Marshall, Pansy Penner and Oma Girsch attended Friendship Night at Western Star Rebekah Lodge in Olathe.
¢ De Soto Mayor Albert Jenks signed a proclamation declaring the week of April 23 to 29, 1979, as the official Volunteer Week in De Soto.
¢ The De Soto High School varsity tennis team took first place at Ottawa in a quadrangular meet with Paola, Ottawa and Wabaunsee.

The Warner Langan family enjoyed its Easter vacation in Denver, Colo.
¢ Mr. and Mrs. Jake Schellack and Clarence Hodge drove to Perry to view the dam, which was under construction.

Stella Coker was hostess to the Double Four Bridge Club. Florence Koeller was the guest. Edna Zellers claimed the highest score and Minnie Burch second highest.
¢ Mr. and Mrs. Louis Taylor went to Linwood to visit Mr. and Mrs. Harry Harbaugh. The occasion was a birthday dinner honoring Mrs. Glenn Zimmerman, niece of Mrs. Taylor.
