Cats can’t keep up success
April 13, 2006
It was nearly a week ago, and in the end it didn’t seem like all that pleasant of a memory. Osawatomie’s Jessica Jones blasted a two-run home run over the left-centerfield fence Friday, erasing De Soto’s hard fought 11-9 lead and all but ending the Cats chance at upsetting the Trojans.
Singles players keep tennis squad flying high
April 13, 2006
Tatsuya Manabe broke a string in his racket Tuesday. Already using his primary backup, he was forced to go with a different racket he hadn’t used nearly as much. Only one day prior De Soto had slugged out a 4-3 dual win over Baldwin, but the Cats’ top doubles team of Andy Edwards and Dan Hoschouer lost for the second time in as many events. Could De Soto’s golden start to the 2006 season finally be over? Were the Cats finally coming back to Earth? Not yet.

Small-town values of De Soto part of springtime walk
April 13, 2006
Even after an unusually mild winter, these early April days seem like a gift. To be outside in the ever-present Kansas springtime breeze and taking in the pastel beauty of another growing season reborn brings a resurgence of energy and feeling of liberation after the harshness of winter.
Awareness key to preventing child abuse
April 13, 2006
April is the first full month of spring: a season associated with fresh beginnings and budding life. It’s also a month dedicated to raising awareness about child abuse and neglect. Why should you care? Because in the United States, more than a million children are abused, neglected or abandoned each year. Every 10 seconds, a child is abused somewhere in this country. And, on average, more than three children die each day as the result of parental maltreatment. Those are harrowing statistics.

Inconsistency continues to slow baseball team
April 13, 2006
It’s not as simple as starting slow or tiring early. Weather, wind or even the opponent can’t explain it. The De Soto baseball team is just inconsistent now, and one need look no further than the disturbing Jekyll and Hyde performance the Cats displayed Tuesday night to find the perfect example.

A trio of girls pole vaulters are chasing the school record
April 13, 2006
The problem with breaking the De Soto girls pole vault record — stuck at eight feet since 2000 — seemed to be six inches. Two Wildcats tied the eight-foot mark in the last two weeks. No Cat has ever been able to one-up the record, however, always failing while attempting to clear 8-6. One has to credit Brianna Cooper for a creative solution to the problem.
