Sharing the holiday spirit

October 27, 2005

Our world is so full of uncertainty. The tragic loss of life and property from the hurricanes in the Gulf Coast, the devastating earthquakes in Asia, the ongoing loss of military men and women and civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan weigh heavily on all our minds. Now more than ever, reaching out and helping our neighbors, both near and far, is so critical.

It takes the caring spirit and generous donations of others for the De Soto Multi-Service Center to provide holiday assistance to those in our community who are in need. We work cooperatively with other agencies to ensure that our efforts are not being duplicated and your previous resources are being distributed and received in a responsible manner.

We serve those in our community who struggle year-round to provide the basics for themselves and their families, including food on the table, medical care, a roof over their heads and utilities to keep them warm. As a helping agency, we are asking for your assistance to provide some basic items to brighten the holidays of these low-income families, senior adults and disabled persons.

Here is how we need your help: turkeys and hams for Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets; monetary donations to go toward the purchase of food items, clothing and gifts for children and payment on utility bills; gift cards from grocery stores or clothing stores; or groups or individuals interested in sponsoring a family, senior adult or disabled person and providing these items.

Please contact the Multi-Service Center as soon as possible if you would like to help out during the 2005 holiday season. I will be glad to answer any further questions you may have regarding the program. My number is (913) 583-1152 or e-mail or KU graduate student Devon Kariker at

Your help and generosity are greatly appreciated.
