Spencer’s seniors could be decisive
November 17, 2005
De Soto girls basketball coach Dwight Spencer didn’t realize the significance, and that’s understandable. This year’s senior class had just always been there. Winless as seventh-graders when Spencer took over the De Soto program after 19 years as an assistant coach in other towns, the seniors didn’t win a game as eighth-graders, either. Now Spencer said he’s hoping for a special season from the first class that he’s seen all the way through junior high and high school.

Totally rec’d
November 17, 2005
There wasn’t a single uniform Monday on the floor of the De Soto Community Center gym. The 12 volleyball players on the floor wore sweat pants, walking shorts, baggy basketball trunks mixed with blue, pink, white, grey, orange and burgundy T-shirts. The players were dressed for a De Soto Parks and Recreation adult volleyball league in which style takes a back seat to comfort and utility. Teams aren’t likely to be outfitted in matching uniforms in a league where most teams don’t have names.

Trio powers cross country season
November 17, 2005
Four months ago, De Soto cross country coach Chris McAfee addressed the upcoming season for his girls team with a decided uncertainty. “I’m a little nervous about it,” he said in August. “What we’ll accomplish, I don’t know. If they set their goals high, they can achieve those, but this is also going to be a team that might fall apart.” Nine races, second-place finishes at both league and regionals and a fifth-place showing at state and it’s obvious which path the team chose to follow.
