For Roxanne Grizzle, Friday’s regional track meet in Tonganoxie wasn’t a do-or-die situation. But it was close. The meet was a lifeline of sorts for area 4A athletes. Either compete and finish in the top four and move on to the state meet in Wichita this weekend. Or go through the motions and stay home.

Stephanie Rhodes, Clarissa Kopp and Jeryka Lobner were all smiles posing for a group photo Saturday minutes after receiving diplomas as part of De Soto High School’s 85th graduating class. Their graduation day added to their growing awareness that distance would soon be imposed on their friendship when they leave for three different schools in the fall. Lobner is going to Pittsburg State to study sports medicine. Kopp is headed to Allen County Community College on a volleyball scholarship, and Rhodes will attend Baker University in Baldwin to study nursing.
Johnson harvests gold at Tonganoxie

As De Soto High School’s Casey Johnson caught his breath after finishing the 3,200-meter run at Friday’s 4A track and field regional in Tonganoxie, teammate Morgan Frehe greeted him with a two-word summation of his day’s performance.

The De Soto Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6654 will have a Memorial Day ceremony at De Soto Cemetery to honor past and present members of the county’s armed forces.

Last week, our technician and/or receptionist, chief kennel steward and animal caretaker, Erica, got married. She promptly marked off the next workweek with the big words “honeymoon,” and we did not see hide or hair of her for about 10 days.
