Dan Hoschouer and Andy Edwards came out of the shadows of five or six teams and won the doubles championship at the De Soto Invitational tennis tournament Saturday to cap a perfect 7-0 week.

De Soto’s girls soccer team did not finish the regular season the way a good team that has post-season aspirations would want to end it. Instead of extending its unbeaten streak to 10 games and building momentum going into the playoffs, the Wildcat fortunes have fallen on hard times with back-to-back shutout losses. The first loss was last Thursday to Mill Valley and the second Monday at Lansing.

Math was a challenge for Katie James as she tried to time her fellow team members on the 3,200-meter relay team as they went for a school record Friday at the Shawnee Mission North Relays. As it turned out James didn’t have to keep close track of the times of team members Melissa Roberts Carrie Wilbert and Lauren Karnitz. The team shattered its mark by 10 seconds, finishing with a time of 10:08.01, which was good enough for sixth-place.
Sunday liquor sales ordinance approved

The city’s liquor stores can open this Sunday after the De Soto City Council passed an ordinance last week allowing the practice.
Pool construction contract approved

Weighing in with a third opinion about how any extra money should be spent, the De Soto City Council approved a contract last Thursday with Vanum Construction of Kansas City, Kan., to build the new municipal swimming pool. With the action, construction on the new $3.33 million pool could start as early as next week.

A day after a fatal school bus crash in Liberty, Mo., De Soto USD 232 operations director Jack Deyoe spent part of Tuesday morning fielding e-mails from parents asking about seat belts. At De Soto’s Laidlaw Transit office, manager Frieda Wells got some of the same questions.

Starside classes celebrate Mexican national holiday

Starside Elementary School teachers planned classroom celebrations to go along with Cinco de Mayo, observed by Mexicans and Mexican-Americans to commemorate the 1862 defeat of French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Spanish lessons, salsa taste-offs and Mexican dancing were enjoyed by all but it proved a special chance for Hispanic students to share some of their heritage with peers.
