Cat golfers earn second in league
Golfers tune up for regional with runner-up league finish
The De Soto golf team members peered into the future when they competed April 25 in the Frontier League golf tournament at the Allen County Country Club in Iola, and they liked what they saw.
"League went well this year," Wildcat golf coach Scott Sharp said. "We competed against eight teams in the same region, and finished placed second out of those teams. If (league) determined who would go to state from our region, we would have been going."
Zach Bader once again led the way for the Wildcats with a 43-40 83. The senior hit the ball well off the tee, but struggled to make good contact with his irons, his coach said. Bader chipped and putted pretty well, but struggled to make birdie.
"Still, an 83 proved to be enough to put us where we need to be going into regionals," Sharp said.
Payne Wilkie (40-45) and Tim Oswald (43-42) were two strokes back with 85s after two rounds on the par 36 nine-hole course.
Wilkie struggled with his chipping, putted very well, but wasn't real accurate with his irons. The freshman sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the eighth hole to highlight his round.
Oswald struggled with his entire short game but put together a birdie on the 15th hole. The junior hit the ball well off the tee, but it was his approach shots that put him in position to fire a low score.
Nic Bergmann fired a personal-best score of 50-46 96 to round out De Soto's team score of 349. The sub-100 round marked the first time the Wildcat broke 100.
Neal Brooks shot a 52-51 103, and Scott McKechnie was good for a 54-56 110.
The Wildcats were able to use two scores in the 80s and two more in the 90s toward their team score April 23 at the Osawatomie Invitational. As a result, De Soto finished ninth out of 20 teams with a team score of 360.
Wilke led the way for the Wildcats with his 86 despite struggling to make solid contact. Wilke had a pretty good front nine, but he struggled on the backside, Sharp said.
Bader would have led the team again had it not been for three out-of-bounds balls. The senior hit off the tee pretty well, Sharp said. Bader chipped well but couldn't make the putts during his rounds.
Oswald and McKechnie put up scores of 43-47 90 and 46-51 97. Mitchel Roberts fired a 51-52 for a 103, while Bergmann tallied a 60-57 117.
De Soto next hits the course at 8:30 a.m. May 16 at the Osawatomie Golf Course for the 4A regional. The regional meet uses a shotgun start.
