If interest is any indication, the city of De Soto could get a good deal on its new pool.

De Soto City Administrator Greg Johnson said nine general contractors and three specialty contractors attended a pre-bid conference on the new pool last Thursday. Moreover, 11 other general contractors and 15 specialty contractors have requested bid sets.

The bond issue De Soto voters approved in April 2003 made $2.5 million available for the construction of the pool behind the De Soto Community Center.

The pool's designer, Treadwell Jones of Larkin Aquatics, told the Council in January that the construction market was very unpredictable. But he suggested that De Soto might benefit from bidding the project when contractors were lining up work for the coming construction season.

Johnson said the interest in the project seemed to confirm that view.

"The interest in the plan set and at the pre-bid conference is encouraging," the city administrator said. "I think it shows the word's gone out.

"We'll see how many bids we get Thursday."

It is hoped the interest will lead to a competitive atmosphere that would allow the city to build a pool with the many features included in its design.

If all the bids exceeded the $2.5 million construction cost, the city would have two options, Johnson said. It could work with a contractor to cut costs in pre-determined areas, he said. If the bids were all deemed excessively high, the city had time to re-bid the pool and still start construction this spring, he said.
