Collins pleads guilty in child porn case

A former De Soto High School administrator pleaded guilty this week to one count of possession of child pornography. Charles Anthony Collins, 34, admitted to a federal judge Monday that he downloaded more than 600 images of child pornography on his personal computer, including many sexually explicit pictures of prepubescent minors, numerous photos of infants and about 100 movies depicting children engaged in sexual activities with adults.

After Kim Adkins counted down from eight Monday evening in the De Soto Senior Center, “The Little Deuce Coupe” continued on for a few bars from a stereo behind her. The end of the countdown was supposed to allow the six women in the De Soto Parks and Recreation toning class to stop the leg flex exercise they had been doing for the past three minutes.

On Monday, local students plunged into their first round of this year’s state assessment tests. This year, De Soto USD 232 abandoned pencils and fill-in-the-bubble paper forms for online testing, a first for the district. Schools are using technology and a few other tricks to make the high-stakes testing season easier on students and, hopefully, more rewarding for the district’s report card.

De Soto played right into the hands of Atchison in Monday’s first-round sub-state game, and the result was a 69-41 season- ending loss. Going into the game, Wildcats basketball coach Jason Generally wanted, his team to limit the Trojans number of possessions. But early in the game, Generally realized he would have to scrap his game plan.

For Neil Erisman there was no “third time is the charm” and no state pin record, but plenty of disappointment when Columbus’ Nick Zahm squeaked out a last-second takedown to win the 152-pound wrestling championship in Wichita.
Wildcats stay alive with listless win

The Wilddcats flirted Tuesday with a nightmare end to their season, but found just enough to avoid a first-round sub-state upset. Jackie Goleman hit turnaround jump shots in the lane, giving De Soto the lead back for good and allowed the Wildcats to knock off Bonner Springs 39-36 in opening round sub-state action in De Soto.
