City, developer reach agreement on Sunflower water plant

In what both parties hope will mark the beginning of a better relationship, the designated developer of the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant agree to deed the water treatment plant on the closed plant to the city of De Soto. The agreement came as the Johnson County Commission readied to name Sunflower Redevelopment LLC, a partnership of Kessinger/Hunter and Co. and International Risk Group, the developer of Sunflower.

De Soto High School entered the Spring Hill Boys Basketball Tournament riding the momentum of a two-game winning streak. But slow starts became a bad habit that doomed De Soto to an eighth-place finish. De Soto started the season 0-3 after finishing last at the Central Heights Tournament in early December. But in the season opening tournament De Soto was more competitive than it was last week.

In a repeat of two years ago, last-minute filings swelled the ranks of those running for De Soto City Council. Four men — Tim Maniez, Ted Morse, Barry Thierer and Dave Vigness — filed for the two open Council seats before the deadline of noon Tuesday, but no one chose to challenge first-term Mayor Dave Anderson.

For the second game in a row, Amy Petty illustrated what it means to be a big-time player. The senior guard, who scored 30 points against Baldwin last week, scored 10 points in the third quarter against Belton to lead the Wildcats to a 50-32 win in the first round of the Louisburg Invitational Girls Basketball Tournament.
