The De Soto Cemetery Board will have a meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the upstairs meeting room at the De Soto Chamber of Commerce building.
The public is urged to attend.

Gary and Bonnie Logan went to Branson, Mo., on their vacation. Their daughter Angie was married at a chapel there in July.

The Merrymakers Club met Aug. 4 at the De Soto Pizza Hut for a luncheon and meeting. Betty Kessler was the hostess. Former De Soto resident Barbara Dickerson was a guest.
The group played Bingo for the program. Everyone won prizes.

The De Soto United Methodist Church is having an ice cream social from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday in the fellowship hall at the church.
Youth group members will show photos and share their experiences from a recent mission trip.

The Rev. Jerry Vaughn's sermon on Sunday will be "Standing in the Storms."

The De Soto Mudcats baseball team had a swimming party and picnic supper Aug. 7 at the home of Wayne and Margie Ireland. The Ireland's grandson plays on the team.
Pictures, baseball albums and trophies were given to each player.

Lana McPherson announced at De Soto Baptist Church services on Sunday that there are two trucks and trailers full of items to take to the Indian reservation in South Dakota.
Because there are more materials to haul, there is a need for gas for the trip, which will be more than 1,800 miles. Lana is accepting donations to help with the cost of gas.

My grandson Brad, who lives with me, had a surprise Saturday when his friend, who lives in Des Moines, came to see him. He bought some of the garage sale items my grandson had for sale. He formerly lived in Olathe.

Frances Lawhead had a special guest -- a friend of Jeanne Lawhead-- with her at church on Sunday. More than 30 years ago, they were classmates while attending Wichita University when they were preparing to become teachers. She now lives in California.

The De Soto VFW No. 5466 Ladies Auxiliary went to the Wadsworth home Aug. 1. Those going were Sue Allen, Frances Lawhead and Mary Bichelmeyer. They took cookies and bananas to the veterans there.

Roger and Hazel Verrill, who live in Overland Park, brought their friend Grace Henslee to visit me last week. Grace lives in Mission.
They brought me a cross American flag pin and a sand dollar from Maine, where they had been for their vacation.
Their son Roger Verrill Jr., and his wife and daughter from Virginia had been to see them too. Roger Jr. is stationed in Spain and soon will have to return to his service there.
The Verrill's granddaughter, who is 4, is having eye surgery.

The special music at the De Soto Baptist Church was a clarinet ensemble comprised of Rebekah Gulley, Keri Hagman, Jenna Hodges and James Ingalls. Their selection was "Be Thou My Vision" with Mary Etta Copeland accompanying them at the piano. The Rev. Richard Copeland said that selection had always been one of his favorites.

Lana McPherson's granddaughter (Karen's daughter) who lives in Oregon was with her at church Sunday.

Geraldine Reed had her grandchild (Joe White's) with her. Omer Lafferty was able to attend church Sunday. He is now living in assisted living at Hillside Village. Fernita Wilson of Hillside Village is having therapy and is in the skilled living area.

Those celebrating birthdays this week are Archie Bedford, Brenda Crisco, Whitney Walker, Sandra Hoover, Walter Johnston, Brad Rains, Luella David, Vergie Opdycke, Gwendy Olivarez, Tim Weese, Mavis Routh, Marie Seal, Larry Stephan and Zola Stephan.

The Bible study group on Wednesday morning at De Soto Baptist Church had two new members last week -- Billy Boyd and Reba Barula.
Anyone is welcome to join the group, which meets at 10 a.m. each Wednesday at the church.
The group started on the Book of Acts last week. Jean Epperson is the teacher.

Birdie Jones' surgery will be this Friday. It was postponed from last Tuesday at Olathe Medical Center. Keith Parker is a patient at Olathe Medical Center with serious health problems. Anita Woywod is having medical tests this week.
Brenda West's mother is in for rehabilitation and needs prayers. Julie Riffel asked for prayers for her dad who is under a doctor's care now. Wilma Mann asked for prayers for Marie Gillihan's daughter, Rosemary, who had a heart attack and is at Olathe Medical Center.
Ruby Thorpe said her husband, George, has kidney stones and will have surgery this week. Donna Luther is having more tests this week for her illness. Linda Nalley hopes her tests will be good after all her chemotherapy she has taken. The McDaniels' friend Dan Searls died this week. He leaves his wife and four children, who need our prayers. Jean Epperson's niece and a nephew are having health problems.
Paula Rhodes asked for prayers for her friend. My daughter-in-law Nancy in Illinois has had improved health., but she's going to the eye doctor with a new problem. Mittie Pingleton's brother in Springfield, Mo., is still critical. I've got an eye doctor appointment this week as well.
