Graveside services for Mary Elizabeth McCarthy, 92, Newton, formerly of Wellsville, were Friday, Jan. 30, at the Stockton Cemetery, Stockton, Mo.
Mrs. McCarthy died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Newton Presbyterian Manor.
She was born Oct. 3, 1911, near Caplinger Mills, Mo., the daughter of Chester and Nora (Moyer) Swangel. She grew up on a farm near Caplinger Mills, where she graduated from high school. She attended Southwest Missouri State University for three years.
Mrs. McCarthy was an elementary school teacher for eight years around the Caplinger Mills area. She moved to the Wellsville/Paola area after her husband's death.
She worked at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in De Soto in the 1950s and during the Vietnam War.
Mrs. McCarthy was a member of the Wellsville United Methodist Church and the Worthwhile Club.
She married Herbert McCarthy on May 10, 1934. He died in 1949.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Antrim, Salina; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A son, Lyle McCarthy, preceded her in death in 1984. Two brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death.
