Although the Jan. 25 deadline to file for the election is still nearly a month away, names are beginning to appear on Johnson County's list of citizens who will run for area school boards in 2005.
Of the three De Soto USD 232 Board of Education members up for re-election next year, none has filed yet, but Jim Plummer said he won't run again, Curtis Allenbrand said he would, and Jim Thomas is still undecided.
Longtime Board member Allenbrand said he planned to file after the first of the year, like usual.
Allen-brand, who is in his 14th year on the De Soto Board, said he hoped to continue his service on the school board.
"I always feel like the job is just not done yet," he said.
Allenbrand, who lives in Olathe, occupies District 3, Position 4, on the De Soto Board.
Plummer, District 3, Position 6, said he would not run for re-election after completing this term, his 12th year on the Board.
Plummer, who lives in De Soto, said he made up his mind some time ago to relinquish his spot when his youngest daughter graduated from high school, which she will do in May 2005.
"That'll be enough time," he said. "Let somebody else have their chance."
The third member up for re-election this spring, Thomas, lives in Shawnee and represents District 2, Position 5.
Thomas, in his sixth year on the board, said he was leaning toward running for another term but would take more time before deciding for sure.
He said he wanted to evaluate his current job and family situations to be sure they would still allow him to take on the commitment required of a school board member.
"I've got to make sure that I feel like I'm doing a good job for the district," he said. "If I feel I'm still a viable, positive influence on the board, then I'll run again."

Board of Education members serve four-year terms.
The 2005 general election will be April 5.
