De Soto girls basketball coach Dwight Spencer said in the days leading up to the Wildcat’s season opening game against Central Heights he would be satisfied with a one-point win. He got that plus 31 more in De Soto’s dominate-every-phase-of-the-game 65-33 rout of the Vikings in the first round of the Ike Cearfoss Tournament at Central Heights High School.

Morford drops ‘interim’ title

First hired in July as interim principal, David Morford’s title was changed to principal of De Soto High School Monday night.
Homeschoolers get robotic workout

Since moving to De Soto from Wichita less than a year ago, Barb and Noel Duerksen have pioneered the Johnson County team. Comprising their two sons, Nate and 16-year-old Aaron, and a handful of like-minded robot junkies, the team hopes to find more homeschool members and introduce robotics competition to area public schools, too.
Council selects western sewer site
Growth potential key in choice

Having decided to hitch its wagon to growth to pay for a new sewer plant, the De Soto City Council decided to get behind the biggest horse. The Council agreed Thursday to build a new plant in the West Bottoms, which consultants estimated would cost $8.6 million to construct and finance.

Simple Simon’s about ready to say hello

The Simple Simon’s set to open in Lexington Plaza should be familiar to those who have visited restaurants in the chain. But there’s one big difference. “This will be the biggest store in the franchise,” said Jeff Burris, who owns the restaurant with his wife, Kelli. Alert De Soto residents have been aware of impending opening of the eatery for more than a month from the “coming soon” sign in front of its Lexington Plaza site. This week, Burris moved two pizza delivery cars to the front of the lot to send a further message of the store’s opening, which should happen Monday.
