Leon V. Roberts

Private family inurnment for Leon V. Roberts, 79, Lawrence, will be in the Pacific Ocean near Washington state.
Mr. Roberts died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at his home.
He was born Dec. 15, 1923, in Buffalo, Mo., the son of Elmer Judson and Catherine (Steinhouse) Roberts.
Mr. Roberts was a paratrooper in the U.S. Army in the Pacific theater from 1941 to 1946. He joined the Lawrence Police Department in 1952 and was policeman of the year in 1958. He achieved the rank of detective. He later joined the Douglas County Sheriff's Department as a deputy and was promoted to undersheriff. He then worked for Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, retiring in 1985.
He moved to Washington in 1986 and returned to Lawrence in 1989. He was a member of Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie No. 309 and past member of the Fraternal Order of the Police.
He married Beverly Lee Shoemaker on May 27, 1949, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Kirk Roberts, Montrose, Colo.; a daughter, Jan Roberts, Lawrence; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care in Douglas County, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
