Veterans plan Memorial Day ceremonies
De Soto VFW Post 6654 will have a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the flag poles in De Soto Cemetery.
Post Commander Doug Bedford said the ceremony would include a wreath placement, 21-gun salute, taps and a prayer in the memory of fallen comrades.
Flags have already been placed on veterans' graves at the cemetery, and the post will place flags along 83rd Street for the weekend, Bedford said.
The post's Memorial Day ceremonies have been at the cemetery since the flag poles were placed there two years ago, the same year City Hall moved to its present 84th Street site and left behind the VFW's memorial.
"Now that they have the flag poles out at the cemetery, it's not a bad place to have it. Until we figure something out with the memorial downtown, I think we'll just have it out there," Bedford said.
