oing into last weekend’s USSSA 15-and-under Tri-County League tournament in Miller Park, De Soto-2 coach James Grizzle wanted the league post-season hardware to go along with his team’s 11-1 regular season record and league championship. But Wellsville had other ideas, and handed De Soto-2 its second and third losses of the year. Both matches came down to the wire.

Following the quarterfinals of last weekend’s United States Specialty Sports Association ‘A’ State Baseball Tournament, it appeared De Soto was in excellent position to land a state champion in either the 8-and-under, 11-and-under or 12-and-under age divisions. But the three De Soto teams made their way into the semifinals, and all three teams were eliminated in that same round.

Sandy Brashears said she has loved the game of baseball since her youth but had never thought about becoming involved in a capacity other than as a spectator. One day her brother, who at the time was an umpire in De Soto, changed her feelings about it.
