Fun Run to kick off festival
The first event of the De Soto Days Festival, once again scheduled for the last weekend in August, will be Aug. 23.
Samantha Todd said the De Soto Days Festival Committee will have a four-mile De Soto Days Fun Run the Saturday before the Aug. 28 through 31 event. The fund-raiser will start at 7:30 a.m. at Lexington Trails Middle School.
The entry fee for those signing up before Aug. 13 was $20, Todd said. The fee after that date until the start of the race was $25, she said. For more information, call Todd at 583-3776.
The festival is once again called the De Soto Days Festival after a four-year run as the Festival. Committee Chairman Max Atwell said the decision was made to give the committee more options in selecting themes. This year's patriotic theme will be particularly noticeable during the parade because the committee will pass out small American flags.
Twenty crafters have already reserved booths for the Saturday craft show, said craft booth chairman Starr Atwell.
At this time, there will be 14 vendors for Thursday's opening night, Kathy Ross said. That number will increase to 17 Saturday. The festival had "all the food vendors we need," she said.
Entertainment will include the band Kansas River Gang for two sets Saturday at Miller Park and Lonnie Rays Blues Band for the 7 p.m. to midnight street dance. Other entertainers will include a 40-foot slide, Old West Gunfighters, a balloon artist, skateboard exhibition, and, of course, patriotic music.
Darrel Zimmerman said he had already raised $1,100 in his effort to find corporate sponsors for the event. with a number of De Soto's large industries and businesses still expected to make a commitment.
"I tell them the money is nice, but what we really want to see is them sponsoring an activity," he said.
