Thelma A. Quaintance

Funeral services for Thelma A. Murphy Quaintance, 97, Olathe, were Saturday, Dec. 29, at Bruce Funeral Home, Gardner. Burial was at Murphy Cemetery, Lenexa.

Mrs. Quaintance died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2001, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Olathe.

She was born Jan. 7, 1904, in Cedar Junction, the daughter of Emmet S. and Mary Hymer Murphy. She graduated from Cedar Junction High School and from Baker University, Baldwin City. She moved to Olathe in 1942 from the Monticello community.

She was an elementary school teacher for 43 years. She began teaching at a one-room country school at Prairie Star, near Olathe. She moved to Meadow Lane Elementary when the school consolidated and taught there for 15 years before serving as principal at the school.

She was a member of Monticello United Methodist Church, Lenexa, where her grandparents were charter members. She also was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter of De Soto and Olathe and a member of the Rebekah's Lodge and the Retired Teachers Association in Olathe.

She married Milton J. Quaintance, who was a former Johnson County Treasurer. He preceded her in death.

Two sisters, Gladys Murphy Strickland and Nell Murphy White; and three brothers, Marion W. Murphy, Rollie W. Murphy and John Harold Murphy, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include two nephews, a niece and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
