January decisions expected for internal candidates
The De Soto USD 232 Board of Education is taking to heart advice it not delay its search for a person to replace retiring Superintendent Marilyn Layman.
At a special meeting Dec. 10, William Majors of the Kansas Association of School Boards laid out an aggressive schedule for the search, because of the many superintendent vacancies in the state, many at districts that would attract the same internal and external candidates as De Soto. At that meeting, the Board agreed to consider internal candidates for the position first. Those candidates were given a Dec. 20 deadline to apply.
At Monday's Board meeting, Board members agreed to schedule a special meeting for 5:30 Dec. 30 so the Board could decide what qualities they want in a new superintendent. At the special meeting earlier in December, the Board agreed to seek public comment on the qualities the new superintendent should possess. The deadline to send those comments to Board clerk Barbara Weis is Dec. 23. Comments should be mailed in care of Weis at De Soto USD 232, 35200 W. 91st Street, De Soto 66018; or e-mailed to Suptsearch@usd232.org.
That action, together with the Dec. 20 deadline for internal applications, could set the stage for the hiring of a new superintendent in January as Majors suggested. The Board also agreed Monday to review the list of internal candidates and set up dates for interviews at the Dec. 20 meeting.
Board President Bill Waye said the Board would either hire an internal candidate in the first two weeks of January or start a search for an outside replacement to Layman. Majors suggested an outside search start with a six- to eight-week application period that ended in early March.
The names of internal candidates applying for the position will not be made public, the Board decided.
