DHS tennis team locating sweet spot

September 27, 2001

With regionals less than two weeks away, tennis teams around the state are experimenting with lineups, attempting to increase the chances of earning a berth in the state tennis tournament.

In De Soto, it is the status quo.

"I think that we are finally getting people in their right spots in the lineup," said De Soto head tennis coach Michael Sullivan. "The doubles teams that played on Saturday worked out well."

Although the team didn't finish as high as it had in other tournaments, Sullivan said its was the team's best effort.

With only two more events before regionals, it's getting down to crunch time for the Lady Cats.

"This will be our last opportunity to evaluate which players will play singles and doubles at regionals," Sullivan said.

In singles action last Saturday, Kim Anderson, who finished seventh, defeated Alexis Eker of Bonner Springs 8-1; lost to Joanna Wochner of Shawnee Mission East 8-1; and lost to Kasey Burk of Atchison 8-5.

Stacy Davis finished sixth after defeating Sandra Kasalova of Mill Valley 8-2; lost to Lauren Wilson of Leavenworth 8-4; defeated Rachel Jones of Atchison 8-4 and lost to Kasey Burk of Atchison 8-2.

In doubles, Bianca Gonzalez and Andrina Parker teamed to reach the consolation semifinals by losing to Jamie Rowe and Elaine Gilleo of Mill Valley 9-8 (1); defeating Michelle Dawson and Jacinda Schasteen of Gardner 8-6 and losing to Bianca Luviano and Stephanie Fesenmeyer of Bonner Springs 8-4.

Maria Gonzalez and Ashleigh Williams reached the consolation semifinal round. They lost to Ashley Moore and Karen Yapan of Leavenworth 8-1, defeated Sally Stillings and Kristen Vandewide of Atchison 9-7 and lost to Caite Ryba and Allison Burgen of Mill Valley 8-1.

Jessica Cuba and Sarah Guedes lost to Jessica Klint and Julie Fridlington of Gardner 8-3 and lost to Caite Ryba and Allison Burgen of Mill Valley 8-0.

De Soto plays the Bonner Springs Invitational at Gardner Thursday and travels to Gardner again Saturday for the Blazer Round Robin tennis tournament.
