Terrorism concerns cancels planned Florida band trip
Fears of airline security in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks put an end to a planned Mill Valley High School trip.
Mill Valley band students won't be taking the previously planned trip to Florida this year. But it wasn't administrators who cancelled the trip, it was the students themselves.
Mill Valley Principal Joe Novak explained to board members at Monday night's school board meeting that there just weren't enough students who wanted to go.
"With almost half not wanting to go, they decided that's not enough to justify the trip," Novak said.
At an earlier board meeting, Novak attributed the lack of interest to the Sept. 11 event.
Novak reported that 21 of the 58 members decided they did not want to make the trip this year.
Novak said the group has not ruled out an alternate trip for the spring semester.
The band group had managed to raise a substantial amount of money for the trip. They have not decided how the money will be used at this point. The board discussed refunding checks or putting the funds in a savings account to use for a later trip.
