Council unites local talent
Diana Zwahlen said a new organization is interested in improving the community by making use of the overlooked resource of local artistic talent.
The Northeast Kansas Cultural Arts Organization was formed during organization meetings the past two Tuesdays. The owner of Artistic Illusions in downtown De Soto said the visual arts will be part of the effort, but the group envisions concerts, plays, poetry recitals and readings.
"We have just a wealth of talent in this area," Zwahlen said. "We want to make use of that to improve the quality of life. We want to make this a place people can live in and enjoy all aspects of life."
The goal is to have artists do more than display, perform or recite, Zwahlen said. They will become a resource in the cultivation of the arts through workshops and demonstrations sponsored by the organization.
"We feel De Soto has a lot to offer," she said. "We have people coming from Eudora, Overland Park and the Stanley-Stillwell area wanting to have a place to teach."
The first such demonstration is June 22. Zwahlen said Keith Russell, a fantasy art illustrator with a national reputation, will offer a class and demonstrations in airbrush techniques at Memorial Hall in downtown De Soto.
An immediate goal is to establish an events calendar for the remainder of 2001 and 2002. Zwahlen said this is the time for residents to offer suggestions for classes or events.
"I've heard frequent requests from residents for drawing, quilting and doll classes," she said.
Anyone with suggestions should call Zwahlen at 583-9901.
